Best Authors for Men

Today is National Author’s Day.  We all know that not every person who writes a book should be celebrated (Stephenie Meyer, Chelsea Handler, Nick Sparks), and now that I look at my examples, some writers shouldn’t even be considered “authors”.  That said, there are many, many great authors whom we should honor.

The following list is by no means comprehensive.  It represents some of the Ultra Manly Book Club’s favorite authors.  The list is comprised of authors whose body of work prove that they aren’t just one book wonders.  They can put out a quality, well-written book over and over again.  Too often we read a great book, but never look for any other books by the same author.  One of my favorite things to do is to spend time sticking with one author’s books.  Its changes the reading experience and helps me see trends in books that I would not see otherwise.

So without further ado, ten great authors that deserve to be honored:

1. Cormac McCarthy

Top Books

  • Blood Meridian
  • The Road
  • No Country for Old Men

McCarthy writes in a class all by himself.  A Pulitzer prize winner, he’s never one to rush a story or push the pace.  His narratives are slow paced and thought provoking, whether he’s talking about the old west or a man on a murder spree.  Plus, he refuses to use quotes proving that he’s his own man. -zach

2. Fyodor Dostoevsky

Top Books

  • Brother’s Kamar
  • The Idiot

He is a master of examining the human spirit and the forces at work within. His stories are full of passion, depth, and grace. He is never an easy read, but the best things in life are not easy.  -luke

3. Mark Twain

Top Books

  • Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
  • Was it Heaven? Or Hell?
  • The Mysterious Stranger

His brilliant and satiric understanding of human and American culture is present in everything he ever wrote. His writing is filled with humor, insight, and sometimes biting truths.  -john

4. Isaac Asimov

Top Books

  • The Foundation Series
  • The Bicentennial Man
  • The Last Question

I love Asimov because his vision of what could be, and man’s reaction to what could be, is still as inspiring today as when he wrote. -john

5. Sherman Alexi

Top Books

  • Reservation Blues
  • Ten Little Indians
  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Alexie’s works both attack and intrigue me. He has a no holds barred writing style that will suck a reader in within the first few lines of any of his works. -john

6. John Steinbeck

Top Books

  • Of Mice and Men
  • Travels With Charley
  • The Wayward Bus

Steinbeck was, in my mind, the ultimate American writer. He captured the hearts of the characters he created, and painted his worlds (mostly rural and forgotten America) in vivid detail that makes reading his stories a delight. -john

7. CS Lewis

Our Favorites:

  • The Chronicles of Narnia
  • The Screwtape Letters
  • The “Space Trilogy”

Lewis is probably best known for The Chronicles of Narnia, and as a Christian Apologetics writer. From my first foray into his mind (The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) to his extremely intriguing look at evil (The Screwtape letters), I am fascinated and humbled by how his mind works. -john

8. JRR Tolkein

Our Favorites:

  • The Hobbit
  • Lord of the Rings Trilogy

The kind of fantasy.  Most of you have seen the movies, the books are an entirely different experience all together.  Stretching the imagination with his mystical creatures, Tolkein ushers many a young man into the world of adventure and epic battle of good vs evil.

9. Robert Ludlum

Our Favorites:

  • Bourne Trilogy
  • The Matarese Circle and Matarese Countdown

Ludlum unabashedly wrote books for solely for guys who want a pulse-pounding, kick-butt story.  For the guy who just wants a good, fun, mindless read, Robert Ludlum is the best.  I will never tire of reading the Bourne trilogy.

10. Flannery O’Conner

Our Favorites:

  • Wise Blood
  • The Violent Bear it Away
  • A Good Man is Hard to Find

More proof that not all authors for men have to be men themselves.  I recommend her short stories, they are amazing.  O’ Conner embraces the bizarre people and odd behaviors that make America who it is. She’s southern, writes with an air of antique America, and has the uncanny gift to breath the honest truth into the simplicity of life. It is the type of writing that you long to read and leaves you grateful, it leaves you appreciative of the world that we live in and the language that we know. -dave

About zach

Staring out across the hazy mountain range on his latest summitting of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Zach saw with a clearness he had not yet seen. "People should tremble at the very sound of my name", he thought. And it was so. "I should master the manly arts of the world, such as barehanded hunting and blacksmithing". And it was so. "People should call me Z$". And it was so.
