Free Books for All! Kindle Lending Library

Amazon Press Release: Introducing the Kindle Owner’s Lending Library.

The official Kindle Library is here!  Free books for all!*

*Well, ok, not for all.  Only for Kindle owners…whole have Amazon Prime..and only certain books…for only a certain period of time.  BUT STILL!

Amazon has announced their long awaited Kindle Lending Library. This is similar to the Lending function they announced several weeks ago, where you can borrow Kindle books through your library.  This new feature differs in the fact that the lending can be done straight from your Kindle and goes directly through Amazon’s website.

We’ve hinted and talked about the benefits of the Kindle platform ad nauseum here, here, here, and here.

See the press release for the details, but here are some quick hits:

  • While many advantages and specials for Amazon’s ebook platform can be taken advantage of by anyone with a computer, tablet, or smartphone, this is the first feature that is only for Kindle e-ink reader owners.  Don’t ask me why it changes now, but if you’re used to reading Kindle books on your iPad you are SOL on the new function
  • The book selection for lending appears to be vastly bigger than books available through your Library.  I can already see 2 past Ultra Manly Book Club books in Hunger Games and Matterhorn.
  • You must be a an Amazon Prime member to take advantage of this.  Prime can pay for itself very quickly now that you can get free books and already have free 2-day shipping on any amazon products.

So don’t get us wrong, this is not a perfect end-all, be-all ebook lending solution.  What it is, though, is another step in the evolution of the publishing industry and can aid in the spread of good, manly, books.

What do you think Kindle owners?  Will this be something you take advantage of?  Non-Kindle owners, does this make you want to by one any more or less?

About zach

Staring out across the hazy mountain range on his latest summitting of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Zach saw with a clearness he had not yet seen. "People should tremble at the very sound of my name", he thought. And it was so. "I should master the manly arts of the world, such as barehanded hunting and blacksmithing". And it was so. "People should call me Z$". And it was so.
