This is not your mother’s book club. This is a group of Ultra Manly men who like to read.
The point of this book club?
We started this group to find great books suitable for our masculinity, and we wanted to prove that book clubs aren’t only for middle aged women. The whole idea of this site is to share great books that 1) are enjoyable and 2) make us think. If we’re going to hang out and have a drink with the guys, why not talk about something meaningful every once in a while?
What does our book group look like?
There is no special formula for starting your own book club, and this one is no different.
My group selects our books about 6 months in advance and gets together once a month to discuss the current book. The first thing we do at each meeting is assign a rating (from 1 to 10) to the book. We don’t qualify our answers; we just share the number with the other guys. Starting each meeting like this gives us a good gage to understand what everyone thinks about the book. It also encourages great conversation. There are no rules for the discussion after that. Sometimes we follow discussion questions we found online, and sometimes we let the conversation flow. Often our initial ratings change after we talk about the book for a while because our discussions bring out new points we hadn’t considered before.
Sometimes we get together and grill before book club. Sometimes we smoke cigars. Usually there’s beer, but there really aren’t any rules.
The only real rule of iUMBC is that we actually talk about the book when we meet either on-line or off-line. That’s it, no other rules.
How to join in?
- Follow the conversation on twitter. Click the “Follow Us” button to the right of this page or search for #iumbc. Join in the discussion all month, especially during the iUMBC meeting.
- Sign up on our e-mail list to officially join the Ultra Manly Book Club. No commitment necessary. We send out a monthly e-mail to introduce each book, provide discussion questions, list information on upcoming book groups, and announce timing of the twitter-based conversations. Don’t worry – we hate spam as much as you do, so we won’t bombard you with junk.
- Start your own club. It’s easy. Call, text, e-mail, tweet, or facebook your friends. Follow along with us and all the work is done for you. Just get the guys together, and you’re good to go.
